Triton Code of Ethics
Acta Non Verba
The Tritons Code
The Monterey Bay Tritons are united by a passion for freediving, spearfishing, and a shared respect for the ocean and its resources. Our club is founded on the principles of safety, sustainability, community, and the preservation of our underwater ecosystems. As Tritons, we pledge to uphold the following Code of Ethics:
1. Teamwork
We recognize the importance of safety in freediving and spearfishing. We commit to always diving with a buddy, looking out for one another, and ensuring the well-being of our fellow Tritons.
2. Sustainable Hunting
We are sustainable hunters, understanding the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. We pledge to take only what we need and to avoid harming non-target species. We honor and respect local regulations and size limits to protect the ocean's biodiversity.
3. Ocean Guardians
We are the patrollers and protectors of the reefs and kelp forests. As Tritons, we actively patrol and protect these vital habitats from pollution, illegal activities, and damage. We strive to be efficient, accurate, and leave no trace during our dives.
4. Respect
We hold deep respect for the ocean and its incredible power. We promise to conduct ourselves in ways that do not harm this precious environment, leaving no trash behind and avoiding any actions that can damage the marine ecosystem. To be a Triton is to be a living example and role model.
5. Honor your Catch
We are responsible hunters who utilize the whole fish. Wasteful practices are against our principles. We value each harvest and make the most of it, ensuring respect for the creatures we encounter and harvest.
6. Sharing Meals and Stories
We believe in the importance of sharing the bounty of our dives, not only as sustenance but as a celebration of our shared adventures. We cherish the tradition of enjoying our catches with friends and family, telling stories of our underwater adventures.
7. Community and Mentorship
We are a community of Tritons dedicated to helping one another grow and develop as freedivers and spearfishers. We offer mentorship to newcomers, fostering strong bonds and ensuring accessibility to our activities to make way for future generations.
8. Ocean Conservation Advocates
We are advocates for ocean conservation, both within our community and beyond. We actively participate in initiatives and activities that promote the well-being of the ocean, such as beach cleanups, restoration efforts, and educational outreach. We strive to leave a positive impact on the marine environment for all.
As members of the Monterey Bay Tritons, we understand that these ethical principles are the foundation of our shared experience. By abiding by this Code of Ethics, we ensure that our underwater pursuits remain sustainable, enjoyable, and contribute to the preservation of our marine environments.
