About The Tritons

A Community of Sustainable Underwater Hunters

Mission

The Monterey Bay Tritons, founded in 2006, are dedicated to advancing safety, education, and stewardship within the freediving and spearfishing community of Northern California. As one of the region’s historic diving clubs, the Tritons exist to provide a structured and supportive environment where certified freedivers can develop their skills, deepen their understanding of the ocean, and participate in a culture grounded in responsibility, mentorship, and respect.

The organization is committed to promoting safe freediving practices through education, training, and the consistent application of proven safety protocols. By creating accessible pathways for divers to learn, train, and connect, the Tritons aim to reduce barriers to entry while fostering a high standard of performance, accountability, and awareness in the water.

Central to the Tritons’ mission is the practice of ethical and sustainable spearfishing. With an emphasis on selective harvest, full utilization of catch, and alignment with local regulations and ecosystem health, the club encourages a deeper connection to wild food systems and seeks to preserve the traditions associated with responsible underwater hunting.

In addition to training and community development, the Tritons actively support ocean conservation through participation in cleanup efforts, habitat restoration initiatives, and public education. Members are encouraged to act as stewards of the marine environment, contributing to the long-term health of kelp forests, reefs, and coastal ecosystems.

Through these efforts, the Monterey Bay Tritons strive to build a resilient and connected diving community. One that honors its history, supports its members, and protects the ocean for future generations.

Adventure

Adventure is what gets us out of bed in the morning. It drives us to push boundaries, take calculated risks, and explore what lies in those places few dare to go. More importantly, adventure brings us together. We unite around a world previously foreign to us—an expanse filled with wonder, danger, beauty, and potential—and together discover the bounty within.

Community

Freedive spearfishing can be an isolating experience. Whether sprawled out on a reef or floating in the bottomless blue, divers are distanced physically and mentally from the world above. But diving is not a solitary activity. From pre-dive networking to the buddy system to post-dive cookouts, we harness the power of community for safety, education, encouragement, friendship and of course, new dive spots.

Food

While the quest for adventure gets us into the field, food keeps us coming back for more. The smell of a fish on an open fire, the texture of a mushroom fresh from the forest floor, the smiles of family and friends as they share a freshly cooked meal—these are the things we dream of most. The Monterey Bay Tritons were founded on the idea that food is a powerful tool. By cultivating shared experiences, we aim to better connect with our ingredients, with our environment, and with one another.

“The universe is an ocean upon which we are the waves. While some decide to surf, others venture to dive.”
