About The Tritons
A Community of Sustainable Underwater Hunters
Mission
The Monterey Bay Tritons are a freediving and spearfishing club focusing on sustainable underwater hunting and community. As a one-stop-shop for spearfishing, foraging, and culinary content, the Tritons work to build a community around a shared passion for the skillset to hunt and forage wild food. With contributions from our local spearfishing community, the Monterey Bay Tritons promotes safe diving and sustainable practices while providing the tools to become a better and more well-rounded hunter-gatherer. In order to promote freedive spearfishing in the most responsible way possible, we have partnered with leading freediving education organizations and instructors.
Recognizing that content alone can only go so far, the Tritons are also proud to contribute to grassroots community-building efforts. Building on the success of the 2019 Monterey Catch-and-Cook Competition, the Tritons continue to coordinate events where like-minded people can gather, learn, and showcase their skills. Our team is composed of freedive professionals, environmental scientists, marine biologists, , photographers, and professional chefs. As the Monterey Bay Tritons network grows, we will continue to partner with scientists, nonprofits, and community advocates to ensure that future generations can continue to share adventure, community, and food. Naturally.
Adventure
Adventure is what gets us out of bed in the morning. It drives us to push boundaries, take calculated risks, and explore what lies in those places few dare to go. More importantly, adventure brings us together. We unite around a world previously foreign to us—an expanse filled with wonder, danger, beauty, and potential—and together discover the bounty within.
Community
Freedive spearfishing can be an isolating experience. Whether sprawled out on a reef or floating in the bottomless blue, divers are distanced physically and mentally from the world above. But diving is not a solitary activity. From pre-dive networking to the buddy system to post-dive cookouts, we harness the power of community for safety, education, encouragement, friendship and of course, new dive spots.
Food
While the quest for adventure gets us into the field, food keeps us coming back for more. The smell of a fish on an open fire, the texture of a mushroom fresh from the forest floor, the smiles of family and friends as they share a freshly cooked meal—these are the things we dream of most. The Monterey Bay Tritons were founded on the idea that food is a powerful tool. By cultivating shared experiences, we aim to better connect with our ingredients, with our environment, and with one another.
